Easy Steps to Identify Your Skin Type at Home

In our last post, we discussed the five main skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Now, let’s dive into a simple three-step method to determine your own skin type. This knowledge is crucial for choosing the right skincare products and crafting a routine tailored to your skin’s needs.

Step 1: Cleanse Your Face

  • Wake up and gently cleanse your face using a mild cleanser.
  • Avoid using any other products after cleansing – no serums, moisturisers, or toners.

Step 2: Wait

  • Allow your skin to rest for 30 minutes without applying any products. This gives your skin time to return to its natural state.

Step 3: The Tissue Paper Test

  • Take a tissue paper and gently pat it on different areas of your face.
  • Observe the tissue paper and your skin for the following:
    • Oily Skin: The tissue paper will have visible oil dots and your skin will appear shiny.
    • Dry Skin: The tissue paper will not have any oil dots, and your skin will feel tight. The tissue paper may also glide easily over your skin.
    • Combination Skin: You’ll notice oil dots on the tissue paper primarily from your T-zone (forehead, nose, and mouth area). Your cheeks and sides of your face may feel tight.
    • Normal Skin: The tissue paper will show minimal oil, and your skin will feel balanced – neither too oily nor too dry.
    • Sensitive Skin: Observe your skin for any redness, flakiness, a thin feeling, or itchiness after the waiting period.

Bonus Tip

Remember to stay hydrated! Regardless of your skin type, adequate water intake is essential for overall skin health. Aim for 4-5 litres of water daily and consider adding coconut water to your routine for a refreshing and hydrating boost.

Identifying your skin type is the first step towards achieving a healthy and radiant complexion. Stay tuned for our next post where we’ll discuss targeted skincare routines for each skin type!
